Do I need a hunting license?

Yes, in order to hunt at Rose Hill Game Preserve a license is required. All Virginia residents are required to have the Virginia Resident Hunting License. All non-residents are required to have the Non Resident Shooting Preserve License. These licenses can be purchased from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

You’re license must be with you during your hunt, so please be sure to print out a copy prior to arriving. Customers can also purchase a 3 day license or a preserve license at a lesser cost from Virginia Game & Inland Fisheries.

Even if you are a spectator, you will need to purchase a permit. You are considered actively participating in a hunt.

What should I bring with me to my bird hunt?

Everyone participating in a hunt is required to wear a hunter blaze orange hat. We also recommend eye and ear protection. The birds will be in both open fields and wooded areas therefore boots and long pants are recommended. RHGP also recommends bringing a small cooler with ice to transport your game home with you. Don’t forget your camera, too!

How many hunters are allowed per party?

Due to safety reasons there is a maximum of four shooters allowed per party.

Guided Quail Hunts will be limited to 2 hunters. We can split your party if needed, to make up parties of 2.

If you are interested in a larger group event, please contact us to make special arrangements or to book a Tower Shoot. We are also happy to arrange custom hunting packages for large parties!

Do I have to hunt with a guide and/or can I bring my own dog?

You are welcome to book one of our guided hunts and may of course bring your own dog for a non-guided hunt! Personal animals must be obedient and controlled as to not interfere with other hunting parties on the property.

Are reservations required?

Yes. In order to provide the best hunting experience possible, we require prior reservations. We cannot guarantee availability for same day walk-ins.

I have never hunted before. Am I still allowed to book a hunt?

Of course! Rose Hill Game Preserve would be happy to take you on your first hunting adventure. Our professional guides will teach you what you need to know about the sport of upland bird hunting!

Do you have any sleeping accommodations on site?

Although our 200-year-old mansion has many bedrooms it is not open to the public. There are plenty of hotels just a few miles down the road in downtown Culpeper or, if you are interested in camping on our 210-acre farm, a special camping site can be prepared for you. RHGP does not supply any camping gear.
